Hydrogeochemical data from carbonate springs as an aid for delimiting catchment areas in the Rovte region, Central Slovenia
Published on: December 10, 2024

We are pleased to announce our article “Hydrogeochemical data from carbonate springs as an aid for delimiting catchment areas in the Rovte region, Central Slovenia” has been published in the Journal of Hydrology: Regional Studies. The article investigates how spring water geochemistry and geological mapping can be used together to refine the catchment areas for fluviokarst springs; for which classical methods for catchment area delimitation that are based solely on topography were found to be inaccurate in karst regions. Furthermore, we found concentrations of trace metals, in particular mercury, in the spring waters that were above drinking water guideline values under certain hydrological conditions.

The research involved Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU members Vanessa Johnston, Filip Šarc and Bojan Otoničar, and our colleague Katarzyna Wątor from the AGH University of Kraków. The research was funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS: N10226) and the National Science Center (Poland).
