Military activities in peacetime (military exercises, various training programmes, etc.) have both direct and indirect impacts on the environment, including the local population. One of the most important impacts is the risk of environmental and natural disasters. To reduce the possibility of such incidents, we will review, analyse, and critically evaluate military activities, especially those involving the handling of hazardous substances. In the first phase, the areas of operation of the Slovenian army will be analysed in terms of environmental impact, and the possibility of environmental and natural disasters will be assessed. Subsequently, the potential impacts and risks of handling hazardous substances in the areas of operation of the Slovenian Armed Forces are defined. On the basis of the results obtained, guidelines for the prevention and reduction of environmental damage and a protocol for dealing with environmental and natural disasters in the area of operations of the Slovenian Armed Forces will be developed.
