Underground water tracing in the Karavanke aquifer (Presušnik–Karavanke tunnel)

Description

Directions and velocities of groundwater flow in the recharge area of the outflow from the southern portal of the Karavanke tunnel, which is a part of a cross-border water body Karavanke, were studied by a tracer test.

Results

A fluorescent dye uranine was injected at low waters on March 10, 2011, in the Presušnik brook, which collects surface waters from the Schlern dolomite west from the tunnel, and at low discharges sinks in the upper part of its stream. First tracer of uranine were detected in very low concentrations at the end of April 2012, and the concentrations has been gradually increasing until the and of November when the project was finished. An additional sampling campaign is planned in order to analyse further appearance of the tracer.
